Good morning! Miss H here again.

I hope you all had a marvellous weekend of commemorations and celebrations! On Friday, we were very patriotic in our house! We decided to have an afternoon tea party so got lots of baking done in the morning. Using my Grandma’s recipes, we made ginger biscuits, fruit scones and our version of a Victoria Sponge cake, where instead of cream and jam, we used homemade lemon curd and lemon buttercream for the topping. We sat out in the garden, basking in the sunshine and left pieces of cake for the neighbours who are also key workers!

Also, we took part in the 2 minutes silence, watched Sir Winston Churchill’s address to the nations, the same one he made 75 years ago and The Queen’s national address at the same time her father made a speech ¾ of a century ago! To end our day, we joined in with the sing-a-long to Dame Vera Lynn’s World War Two classic, We’ll Meet Again. It was such a moving day where my Grandma told us stories of what it was like, aged 11, during those troubled times.

How did you commemorate the occasion? Send us your pictures so we can create something together!

Here is the suggested timetable for the day:

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins (remember to record your reading in your planners)

Active time - Joe Wicks guided PE lesson at 9am

(https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ)

Don’t forget GoNoodle:

https://www.gonoodle.com/

Maths/Reading Comprehension - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

Break – Why not have a game of hide and seek? Where in your house is there to hide?

Geography

Maths;

8 questions;

  1. 485 + 547
  2. 446 - 129
  3. 73 x 6
  4. 445 divided by 5
  5. 73 x 100
  6. 1/6 of 54
  7. 2/10 + 5/10
  8. 354 + 60

Activity;

Reading comprehension;

Remember to keep reading 1 to 1 with someone every day! It is Monday again which means it is time for some comprehension. Either choose one activity from your pack or try this comprehension about VE Day. As we commemorated this on Friday, I thought that this would be a good opportunity to consolidate what you had learned about this historic event.

Geography

We are going to carry on looking at UK geography. The UK is split up into lots of different counties. Click here to find out what a county is.

How many counties of the UK can you name? Do you know where they are?

Your task for today is to locate the county where you live on the map here.

Then I would like you to make a fact file about your county thinking of these questions:

What foods are associated with this area?

Which famous people grew up here?

Is there a special county day?

Hope you have a lovely day the weather starts to pick up again soon!

Stay safe!

75th Anniversary of VE Day

admin on: Class 3

8th May 2020

What an exciting day this is today!

8th May 1945 marked the formal conclusion of the war with Germany and brought to an end six years of suffering, courage and endurance across the world. On VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) people ran out on to the streets, hanging bunting and banners and began dancing. People organised impromptu street parties, shared rationed food with the neighbours and listened to the wireless for updates. This was and is still such a poignant moment in our country’s history.

Did you know that The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, ventured out with a group of friends, including her sister Princess Margret, to experience the excitement in London? They had to do this in secret and The Queen described it as “one of the most memorable nights of my life”. This photo shows Sir Winston Churchill on the balcony of Buckingham Palace alongside the Royal Family. (Princess Elizabeth, who is currently The Queen, is seen on the left)

Here are some activities that you can de relating to this:

PowerPoint and a link to a video with information about VE Day:

Recipe booklet with recipes in from when rations were in place.

Try World War Two classics from Glenn Miller, Vera Lynn or The Andrew Sister on this Spotify playlist:

Design a bug! In the Second World War the Squander Bug urged people not to waste money but to save it for the war effort:

Make some bunting to hang around your house!

Have a look at this information from English Heritage – you can make special wartime recipes or even learn to swing dance!

On the television, there are many different events happening as well, here are some that the BBC are televising:

11am – Two-minute Silence

At 11am, BBC One will lead a poignant two-minute silence to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Secord World War. This national moment of remembrance will pay tribute to heroes’ past and present.

2.45pm – Sir Winston Churchill’s famous victory speech

At 2.45pm BBC One will broadcast a pre-recorded programme including Sir Winston Churchill’s famous victory speech in which he addressed the nation to announce the end of the war in Europe, which he made from 10 Downing Street on May 8th 1945. This will give everyone in the UK an opportunity to come together, to pay tribute to the Second World War generation and show our gratitude to them for their service and sacrifice during the war.

3pm – Tribute to Sir Winston Churchill

At the heart of the broadcast will be a specially created film to celebrate and remember Sir Winston Churchill’s famous radio address that he made to the nation at 3pm on VE Day. This will be a poignant and emotional piece, reminding both those who were there and other generations of this monumental day in our history. Throughout the event, stirring music from military performers will evoke the wartime spirit and the joy that music could bring even in the darkest of days.

9pm – Special Address from The Queen

At the exact time her father addressed the nation three-quarters of a century ago, Her Majesty The Queen will make a special address to everyone. Here, there will be a national sing-a-long to Dame Vera Lynn’s song ‘We’ll Meet Again’. The song found its fame during the Second World War, as it resonated with soldiers who had to leave their families and fight for Britain.  Here are the lyrics.

Here are some of your amazing VE Day posters you have already done!

Remember to send us your pictures of how you are commemorating the special day!

Say safe!

Well what a short week we have had this week! Today, I got an envelope through the post … It was a mystery to what was in it or who had sent it but I did recognise the writing on the front it was from my sister. Inside was the loveliest little present. Here is what she had sent me …

It brought tears to my eyes as this has been the longest time we have spent without properly seeing each other! I video called her to thank her and felt better for seeing her! Little, thoughtful things like these can make a huge difference to people! Maybe you could make something for someone special and give it to them, just something simple to let them know you are thinking of them!

Here is the suggested timetable for today:

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins (remember to record your reading in your planners)

Active time - Joe Wicks guided PE lesson at 9am

(https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ)

Don’t forget GoNoodle:

https://www.gonoodle.com/

Maths/Literacy - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

Break – Have a look at the clouds, what shapes or objects can you make?

Art

Maths;

8 questions;

  1. £7.63 + 52p
  2. £4.36 + £3.24
  3. 1/5 of 100
  4. 379 + 20
  5. 546 - 50
  6. 24 x 6
  7. 2/7 + 4/7
  8. What was the time 15 minutes ago?

Activity;

Literacy;

Did you find your research interesting yesterday? I know I have found it very fascinating finding out about VE Day! Today, you are going to be writing your notes up to create a non-chronological report. Make sure you use headings, paragraphs and of course, full stops and capital letters! Here is some special VE Day lined paper you could use. Remember, you can add images and drawings to your reports to break up the writing. I can’t wait to see them!

Art;

We are going to carry on looking at photography. Forced perspective is a technique that creates an optical illusion go make an object appear further away, closer, larger or smaller that it actually is. It is used primarily in photography.

These are made by having an object close to the camera lens to make it look bigger and something further away to make it look smaller. There is no editing involved.

Have a look at some I attempted when we visited the Tower of Pisa last Easter …

What do you think? Now, think of a creative scene with an object or second (or third) person and set up your photograph.

If you don’t have access to a digital camera, you could draw what your idea would have been. Good luck and happy snapping!

Here is the Lego challenge for today! Remember to email us your creations! If you don't have Lego, don't worry any construction material will do …

Remember, tomorrow I will just be posting different activities relating to VE Day as it is the 75th anniversary of this historical event, have I mentioned this already?! Make sure you enjoy but of course, stay safe!

Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day! Miss H here

We have been very busy quizzing lately with friends and family members! I have taken on a quizmaster role although I don’t think I will be as good as Jacob from what his mum was telling me! Each household taking part comes up with 10 questions on a topic. We then take it in turns reading out our questions followed by the answers. My sister, who is in a different household to us, has been score keeper. Rather her than me! We have asked people to come up with team names and my mum, Grandma and I are called Here Come the Girls! I then take a picture of all of us together as a way to remember. Here is one from a quiz with some of our family …

Maybe you could organise a quiz by making up some questions on a topic?

Here is the suggested timetable for today:

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins (remember to record your reading in your planners)

Active time - Joe Wicks guided PE lesson at 9am

(https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ)

Don’t forget GoNoodle:

Break – Have a go at one of the ‘Kid’s Quizzes’ on this YouTube channel? https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvKtHtvrS4LO3a0igHMPnD9W2u9bo8Lxd

French

Maths;

8 questions;

  1. 5/10 + 5/10
  2. 7/7 – 3/7
  3. 410 divided by 5
  4. 81 x 10
  5. 1/6 of 66
  6. 6kg 124g + 2kg 934g
  7. 511 + 553
  8. 678 - 20

Activity;

Literacy;

Did you enjoy using your dictionary yesterday? I love looking for the meaning of words and then using them!

As I mentioned yesterday in PSHE, Friday marks the 75th anniversary of VE day. Today I would like you to do some research to find out what VE Day is and why we celebrate it. Here are some questions for you to think about:

  • What does VE stand for?
  • Why do we celebrate VE Day?
  • How was the first VE Day celebrated?
  • Why does VE Day not mark the end of World War Two?

You could write about other facts that you find, these are just a starting point for you! Make some notes about what you find and tomorrow we will write up our findings in a non-chronological report. Here is a PowerPoint with some information and a link to a good video all about VE Day:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr

French;

Bonjour tout le monde, Miss H ici! Today in French we are going to carry on looking at the French names for the colours. I find colouring very therapeutic so here is a colouring activity I have found to help you practise using your French colour knowledge. Also, remember Duolingo which is a fabulous way to learn in short, easy sessions. Here is an image of the coloriage magique (Colour by numbers) as well …

Here is the Lego challenge for today! Remember to email us your creations! If you don't have Lego, don't worry any construction material will do …

Have a lovely day and remember email us your work and to say hello!

Miss H
