Good morning all!

I can't believe it's Monday again! Where does the time go?

Thank you once again for all your lovely photos and hard work last week. I realize many of you are beginning to find working from home very tricky; please keep going though, it will be of great benefit when you do return to school. Please send me a quick message once a week or some photos to let me know how you are doing too.

Here's today's activities.......

P.E. It's entirely up to you whether you join Joe Wicks, try some yoga or create your own circuit training course around the house!! Can you think of an exercise to do in every room and decide how many repetitions of that exercise everyone has to do (either 5, 10 or 15 perhaps)? Everyone in the family could have a go and you could time how long the course takes them!! Who does it the quickest?

Literacy; (grammar)

Today have a look at the Schofield and Sims activity on page 34; 'Paragraphs: non-fiction'. Look at the instructions and guidance with an adult and then have a go. Non-fiction paragraphs often use sub-headings so the activity is allowing you to practise this. This will help you for an activity later in the week.

Take your time, keep your writing joined and as neat as you can! Don't forget your fabulous punctuation too!

Reading:

Today I'd really like you to revisit the text you were looking at on Purple Mash. Most of you were reading 'Sleeping Volcanoes' in the Emeralds collection; please can you read chapter 3 and the multiple choice questions to follow. I've created a 2Do for you.

**If 'Sleeping Volcanoes' has proved too difficult for your child there are easier texts in 'Fire Bolts'; I have created a 2Do on Purple Mash for the 'Red 5-A-Side' text book 1, chapter 1 OR  your child may prefer the 'White Star Chronicle' book 1, chapter 1 (again I have created a 2Do if your child prefers this one). There are no questions for these texts so please do ask your child lots of questions afterwards; testing their comprehension!!

8 questions;

1. 345 – 30

Rather than a problem today, please can you have a go at Times Tables Rockstars; keep practising as it does get easier!

Activity;

L.O. To understand instructions involving turns and directions. To also understand a quarter turn is a right angle.

Main;

Take a large piece of paper or card and using a ruler and felt pen draw a large cross on the paper, creating 4 quarters. Can you label each angle as a right angle. Now use a different coloured felt pen and label the end of each line with North, South, East and West. Stand a toy figure in the centre of the cross facing North.

You may want to practise making quarter turns clockwise or anti-clockwise yourself first and perhaps drawing a clockwise and anti-clockwise arrow will help too!

Now follow these instructions and tell me which way the toy is facing after each instruction....

  1. Make 2 quarter turns clockwise.......
  2. Make 1 quarter turn clockwise...
  3. Make 3 quarter turns clockwise....
  4. Make 1 quarter turn anti-clockwise....
  5. Make 3 quarter turns anti-clockwise....
  6. Make 2 quarter turns anti-clockwise...
  7. Make 4 quarter turns clockwise....
  8. How many right angles in 3 turns?
  9. What does 2 quarter turns make? Try it with your toy (ie a full turn, a half turn or a quarter turn?)
  10. What does 4 quarter turns make? Try it with your toy.

Have fun practising yourself! Ask Mum or Dad to give you instructions.

Charlie decided to show me what his imaginary happy place would be like by creating it on 'Minecraft'; what a great idea! Notice the second photo shows him in front of the 'Board Games' area as he just loves them; me too Charlie!

Here's the work Mia did on lines; great idea! She has labelled the different types; horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular. Super job Mia!

    

This is Mia's wonderful 'Rainbow World'; her imaginary safe and happy place! Above is her lovely description of it too; well done Mia!

Maths:

There's no '8 questions' or a problem today, just 'Mathletics'!

Today, I've set 2 tasks on Mathletics for you in the 'Properties of Shapes' section; one is recapping your learning on 'lines' and the other is looking at the characteristics of 3D shapes. I know you've worked really hard all week and needed a less tricky task!

Literacy:

Today I thought we could link your learning in literacy with computing....

I've set a 2Do for you on Purple Mash; it's a game review. If you need to, select the 'home' page, then 'English', '2Publish Plus' and finally the 'Blank Computer Game Review'.

I am sure many of you have played and enjoyed a number of computer games at times during lockdown. I'd like you to think carefully about which has been your favourite game and complete a review of that game for me. Save it in your file when you have completed it and perhaps print it out or take a photo of it so I can post it for you if you like.

If you haven't played a computer game and prefer board games (I love board games) you could write your review on your favourite board game instead.

I can't wait to read your reviews!

Science;

I have a problem I'd like you to solve for me!

I keep waking up at 4.30am at the moment because of the sunlight beginning to shine through the bedroom window. It's very annoying!!

I'd like you to conduct a mini experiment for me to find a material that won't let the sunlight stream through the fabric and wake me up. Materials are either 'opaque' (don't allow sunlight to pass through), 'transluscent' (allow some light to pass through) or 'transparent' (allow lots of light to pass through it- like glass for example).

NB An opaque material will create a shadow when light is shone at it because it blocks the beam of light.

See if you can find a selection of materials that you can test. Ask mum or dad to help you choose quite a few.

You'll need a torch, some white paper or a light coloured wall and someone to help you.

Make a prediction before you begin.

Here's a similar experiment...

One by one, shine the torch onto the fabric/material to find out which will let the least amount of light through.

Can you create a table to display your results?

Can you tell me which let the least light through? Did any material create a shadow?

So, what can you conclude?

Hello again Class 3!

Where has that lovely sunshine gone? Oh well, I suppose the plants need watering!! Fingers crossed for more sunshine very soon!

Literacy;

Let's begin with spelling;

I've set a 2Do on Purple Mash for you. Today I'd like you to focus on the 'aw' and 'ew' sounds. Here's a link to the activity, but you will find it listed in your 2Do file.

Main activity;

L.O. To describe your imaginary special, happy and safe place.

Yesterday I suggested you have a look at the online text 'My Hero is You' (a fictional text surrounding the coronavirus). I asked you to imagine your very own special, happy and safe place that you would visit if you could and take special family or friends with you. Today I'd like you to really think about this imaginary place and describe it using lots of exciting adjectives. Think about what you would see, hear, smell and how it would feel there. Who would you invite? What would you do and what would you talk about? Plan your writing carefully and see if you can use paragraphs. Don't forget your beautiful joined up writing, careful spelling and punctuation too.

Here's what mine might look like.....

Problem; If Laurie set off on a bike ride at 09.15 and got back home at 10.05, how long was he on his ride? Again, use your clock to help you if you need it (remember to count in 5's as you work out the difference).

Main;

Today I'd like you to focus on 'lines'! We will be looking at vertical and horizontal lines, as well as pairs of parallel lines and also perpendicular lines. Ask an adult to help you locate examples of these around the home. Can you draw some of the objects you find and label the type of line or pairs of lines?

If you prefer, you can try either A or B on this activity;

Art;

This half term we will be focusing on our local area. I had hoped the weather would be glorious and you could sit in a local field or on a wall and carefully sketch one of our beautiful local landscapes, before then using pastels or crayons to add colour (remembering to colour the whole of the paper).

However, if the weather isn't too good, you could take a photo of one of the landscapes whilst you are on a walk and try and copy the photo. 

(If the weather is too miserable you could even focus on the scene through one of your windows at home).

Have fun and enjoy a relaxing pastime!

Reading;

(NB Reading aloud to an adult and answering lots of questions would be great instead of the activity below if you are short of time) 

Please could you read chapter 2 of 'Sleeping Volcano' (in 'Purple Mash', 'Serial Mash', 'Emeralds') and try the multiple choice questions too. I have set a 2Do for you.

OR,

If 'Emeralds' proves too tricky, please do select 'Diamonds' and choose a text; the texts will be less lengthy and the text easier too.

Good morning fabulous year 3!

How are you all? I'm missing you lots and lots! I've been in school for the last 2 days getting all ready for the children coming into school later this week; I really wish class 3 were coming in too. Keep crossing your fingers that one day before the Summer holidays Boris tells us that you can all come in too.

Let's look at Wednesday.....

Literacy;

1. First, please could you complete the phonics task? I've created a 2Do on Purple Mash; it's the spelling activity in 'Phonics', 'Phase 5', 'Phase 5 Cloze'; select the sounds ie, ea, oy. This will be a great spelling recap activity.

2. For your main activity please could you have a look at the lovely fictional text below; 'My Hero is You'. Please ask an adult to read it to you and enjoy a lovely story together. I think it's such a lovely recently published online story and a great way of addressing some of the anxieties children may have about the coronavirus. Have a look and see what you think.

After sharing the book, please can you think of a special imaginary safe place you'd like to take yourself and your family or friends. Can you create a colourful and detailed drawing of this special place?

Problem; I have 6 faces, 8 vertices, 12 edges and only 2 of my faces are squares. What shape am I?

Activity;

Now you've made lots of 3D shapes you may find this activity a little easier! Some of the shapes are a little tricky so do work with an adult's help if you need it. Remember, there are many different prisms; the most familiar to you is the triangular prism, but there are hexagonal and octagonal etc too. A triangular based pyramid is also called a tetrahedron!

Have a go! Try section A OR B (only select C if A or B are too easy).

Geography;

L.O. To locate the capital cities of the UK and some of the counties.

If you have an atlas can you carefully trace around the outline of the UK? Alternatively, print out an outline from the internet. Using a map of the UK please can you accurately plot the 4 capital cities on your map. Can you then look at the counties (eg Berkshire, Yorkshire) within the UK; now can you use coloured crayons to highlight the largest of the counties; you might select 6 or more, it is up to you. Do label them clearly and try and become familiar with where they are. I might ask you later!!

French;

Today, have a look at 'Duolingo' again and try one of the activities; they are great fun and do improve your French. Choose the beginners version and enjoy!!
