This week in Year 3, we spent some time learning and thinking about Mary Anning. She was a famous lady who found lots of fossils on a beach in Dorset. After a thunderstorm, rocks would wash in and fossils from the sea could be found. We looked at Ammonites and dinosaur poo (coprolites)! Mary Anning called the curiosities.
In Maths this week we practiced column subtraction. There were three columns, with hundreds, tens and ones. We also did a little bit of column addition.
In History we are learning about how to make bronze metal. First tin and copper were mined out of the rocks (ore), the metal goes into a pot where it is hung over a very hot fire. The metals are heated together until they melt and become a liquid. Next the liquid is moulded into a shape such as an arrow head or another tool.
In Literacy we were writing about have learnt about imperative verbs (bossy words). The children were fantastic at being bossy! We learn about how to wash a woolly mammoth, which was surprising similar to washing a baby or a dog we decided!
We really enjoyed PE this week continuing our dances and practicing our footballing skills. We refined our dribbling and passing techniques. We worked in groups of fours.
Again, we had our singing assembly. It was fun singing ‘Cauliflower’s Fluffy and Cabbages Green’, ‘Harvest Tango’ and ‘Hey My Name is Joe’.
During Outdoor Learning we learnt and practiced tying knots. This was quite tricky! We also collected rocks and built our own version of a Stone Age campfire. We added orange and yellow leaves to make it look like fire!
In Computing we learning about websites and how we might recognise whether a website was a real site with real facts. We got to make spoof websites about rats, planets and dogs. They were supposed to be silly!
Our favourite dinner this week was fish and chips.

Welcome to Year 3's Blog.
We looked at Stone Henge in History and we also looked at a Palaeolithic spear and a books about metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks. Jude explained how he used an anvil and a knapping stone to help make the flint head. Amazing!
In English, we have been looking at noun phrases. We tried to add more details for example we wrote:
The poor, old man rode into town.
The tall, smart man rode into town.
The silly clown wore long, colourful shoes.
The long haired girl walked into the dense, emerald forest.
We had fun making different sentences up.
We have been reading The Stone Age Boy and writing our own noun phrases into our work.
We have had a great time in PE. Miss Watkins arms are still aching from dance!
We unfortunately lost the Mathletics trophy, but we won the Spelling Shed one.

Well done this week everyone.
Have a safe weekend.

This week at Netherthong School we have been exceptionally busy Year 3 children!
In Maths this week we practiced our column addition sums, this was fairly easy however we were practicing how to make sure our layout was very neat. We were also thinking about our number formation to make sure each number was really clear.
In History we are learning about the Stone Age. We looked at different cave environments and learnt about how caves make cosy homes especially when a campfire is lit. We learnt all about the amazing Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae. They were amazingly clever to be able to build these houses out of stones.
In Science we continued looking at different rocks and we looked very closely through magnifying glasses and microscopes. We could see all of the very fine details and sparkles that the rocks had. We then carried out an investigation into the properties of the rocks and recorded our results in a table.
We really enjoyed PE this week, we continued learning our dances. We practiced even more and danced to music from Encanto. We love this music! We concentrated on our stretches too, we are making sure we are flexible.
During our singing assembly we started to learn different actions that go with our songs ‘Cauliflowers fluffy’ and ‘My Name is Joe’. We also sang a few other songs with Miss Watkins as the computer with the music stopped working!
Our favourite dinner this week was the chicken burger and salmon pasta bake. Yummy!

This week at Netherthong School was our second week back. We are starting to feel like we are experienced Year 3 children.
We spent some time learning and thinking about our new topics in Year 3 such as the Stone Age and Rocks. In Science we learnt about different types of rocks – Sedimentary rock (this is found under the sea and it forms layers like a sandwich), Metamorphic rock (this is found underground and can under pressure create earth quakes if the pressure changes) and Igneous rocks (rock that stays in the ground and it includes magma and lava. It is extremely hot). We also looked at the differences in manmade and natural rocks.
In Maths this week we practiced using Hundreds, Tens and Ones again with place value. For example, 952 is 9 Hundreds, 5 Tens and 2 ones.
In History we are learning about the Stone Age. We looked at Rock and Cave Art The paintings included Wooley Mammoths and lots of hands prints.
We really enjoyed PE this week we continued learning our dances that we were practicing our positions and moves.
For the first time in ages we had our singing assembly. It was fun singing ‘Cauliflowers Fluffy’ and ‘My Name is Joe’.
During Outdoor Learning we used charcoal to draw some of our Wooley Mammoths and hand prints. We added colour using soil, grass and scrunched up leaves.
In Computing we learning about keeping safe when using the internet and social media. It is very important to keep ourselves safe. Personal information, not talking to strangers and keeping our passwords safe is very important.
Our favourite dinner this week was chicken tikka wrap and southern fried chicken.

Welcome to our first blog, written by Annabel and Leon from Class 3.
Our first week back at Netherthong School was fantastic, being back at school and seeing our friends and teachers again. Something that was tricky this week was moving up to Year 3, we kept forgetting which way to go to our classroom. Luckily Miss Watkins has been there to help.
A new experience for some of us was going to breakfast club. I enjoy playing with my friends and eating honey on toast and different cereals. After school club has been fun playing outside on the playground.
We spent some time learning and thinking about ourselves and getting to know each other in Year 3. In Art we painted our self-portraits. We love doing Art especially drawing and painting. We learnt to draw eyes and the other facial features sketching lightly in pencil and how to use watercolours to add colour. The noses were a particular challenge as were the lips. We learnt that our hair had different tones and shades of colour.
In Science we learnt about different kinds of rocks, Mount Fuji in Japan and the Giants Causeway in Ireland.
In Maths, this week, we practiced using large odd and even numbers for example, 781, 466, 321.
In History we are learning about the Stone Age. We have learnt that there are different times in history, like the Ice Age and Iron Age.
In English we wrote about ourselves. We described what we looked like, our likes and dislikes.
We really enjoyed PE this week, we had a dance instructor called Lucy. She was very good at showing us how to do different positions. We liked the funky music she played!
