Rosie's Walk and Buzzing Bees!

admin on: Reception

27th May 2021

What a bee-rilliant week we have had looking at the story Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins and bees.

We have been looking at propositions, which links in well with our story. We even acted out the story, moving to the positional language in the story.

We made some windmills out of paper that we folded ourselves!

On Wednesday, we looked at bees as the fox crashes into lots of bee hives. We learnt lots of fascinating facts then some of us even wrote a fact file about bees and stuck the picture in the correct order to show the life cycle of the bee!

Using oil pastels, we colouring different bees and made our climbing frame into a hive. We then sampled different honey on bread. How yummy this was!

We used 2D shapes to make our own bee-utiful bees.

Some of the children decided to make a hive using building blocks and Unu.

What a fabulous half term all the children have had and we are so proud of the progress that they have all made!

We can't wait to start our last half term with this amazing class!

Sunflowers everywhere!

admin on: Reception

21st March 2021

What a lovely week we have had exploring sunflowers. We have focused on these questions:

What is a Sunflower?

Do all sunflowers look the same?

Where do they grow?

Where can we find out about sunflowers?

Using newspaper, we made our own plant pots and planted a sunflower seed. We will be watching them grow over the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, we looked at the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We used oil pastels to replicate different paintings that he did throughout his life. Also, we used watercolours to paint a dream that we had as Vincent Van Gogh once said "I dream my painting, then I paint my dream.".

As a class, we drew sunflowers on colourful paper and then attached them to create a collection of sunflowers, which were one of Vincent's favourite flowers.

Why not try to spot some sunflowers over the weekend? Have a lovely rest and see you for our last week of the half term next week!

Happy Wesak!

admin on: Reception

14th May 2021

Happy Wesak! In preparation for the Buddhist festival on May 26th, we have been looking at how people who follow this religion celebrate. As Buddhists believe in kindness, we have been practising being extra kind to everyone, both at home and in school.

We designed lotus flowers and leaves from the Bodhi tree to decorate our climbing frame. We then had a picnic underneath, like a marquee, as Buddhists decorate their own marquees and have a feast in them with family and friends.

Buddhists believe in meditation which helps to relax and soothe the soul. We listened to mindful music while we did some meditation of our own.

In maths, we have been looking at different shapes. We discovered how squares, put together, can make bigger squares or rectangles. We also looked at the book Grandpa's Quilt by Betsy Franco and then using 2D shapes, designed our own quilt for Grandpa which would cover his feet! Towards the end of the week, we looked at tangrams and made our own patterns with them.

Why not try meditating at home this weekend!

Have a relaxing weekend and hope the weather stays dry!

We are all about healthy habits

admin on: Reception

7th May 2021

What a positive week we have had here in Reception! We have been looking at how we can keep ourselves healthy and safe. This includes our bodies, minds, hygiene and keeping safe on roads. We also had a discussion as to what makes a balanced diet.

We have looked at healthy and unhealthy food groups. We had to sort through various different foods and make a decision as to whether the food needed to go in the healthy circle or the unhealthy circle.

We used various different equipment to find different ways we could exercise our bodies and make our heart rate increase, building the muscles inside the heart and around the rest of our bodies.

We used meditation and yoga to calm ourselves down and give our bodies and minds time to relax and be in the moment, thinking about keeping positive thoughts flowing.

We learnt two songs to help us wash our hands and brush our teeth for the correct amount of time. Here are the links to the songs:

Brush Your Teeth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCio_xVlgQ0

What a busy week we have had, even though it has been a short one!

have a lovely weekend and hope the sun continues to shine!

Vegetables everywhere!

admin on: Reception

30th April 2021

This week we have been looking at the book, Oliver's Vegetables by Vivian French. We looked at which vegetables grow above and below the ground. We then looked at which part of the plant we eat, the roots, stem, leaves or flower.

On Wednesday, we looked at the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who painted pictures of different fruits, vegetables, meat and fish together to make portraits of people. We had a go at this ourselves, using paint, pastels and cut out fruit.

In science, we predicted which vegetables would sink or float in water. We recorded our predictions then tested them and were surprised with the results!

Oliver brought some exciting items into class this week! At his Grandad's farm, they had de-horned a cow and bull, so after they have been disinfected, he brought them in to show everyone! We even got to see videos and pictures of the process the vet used. Thank you Oliver and family!

Why not try some different vegetables at home!

Have a lovely long bank holiday weekend and we hope the weather stays sunny!
