Class 6
Marvellous Mexican Cooking!
admin on: Class 6
21st May 2021
This half term we have been cooking! We started the topic by looking at the principles of a healthy and varied diet then moved on to look at where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. We decided to focus on Mexican cuisine so spent some time researching the culture and their cuisine.
In our first week of cooking, we made nachos, guacamole and salsa. We made all of these from scratch, using the bridge technique to chop the vegetables and cut the tortillas to form the nachos. Here are the links to the recipes we used:
During our second week, we made quesadillas! Again, we used the techniques we learnt the previous week and even had a go at flipping our quesadillas! Here are the links to the recipes we used:
In our final week, we cooked Mexican rice and tacos. Here are the links to the recipes we used:
What a fiesta of a time we have had making all of these delicious dishes!
Miss H :) xx

Boccia... we played boccia this week. And a fun time was had by all!
We also completed our Floodland topic in English, with diary writing and our own predictions - writing the next chapter.
A lot of thought and high level writing went into both pieces.
Maths has been continuing with statistics, looking at mean, then moving on to a revision of measurements and conversion between different units, culminating in a very challenging problem solving lesson, involving 3-step conversion real-life problems. The class were SUPERB!
In Science, we rounded off the Properties of Materials topic and began Evolution and Inheritance, with some deep-seated conversations about genes and characteristics - this promises to be very rewarding!
We have also done a mini project on proverbs, coming up with some superb ones! If life gives you potatoes, make crisps (my favourite). Whatever life throws at you, catch it. If you think you're perfect, you never will be.
Shame about the weather, but we are lucky to be in a school in beautiful surroundings and also it does make us appreciate it more when the lovely weather arrives.
Summer is coming... honest!
Have a lovely weekend - Mr C, Mrs J and team.

Another fun-filled week.
We have been doing pie charts (don't you love using compasses?) and then revising ratios in maths.
Science has seen us assessing our oxidation experiments and our overall understanding of materials and their properties.
Floodland continues in English...
With letters written to Zoe, giving her advice and groups establishing rules for their island tribes:
PE has been very frustrating; all this beautiful sunshine and AS SOON AS CLASS 6 STEP OUTSIDE... we have got wet this week... but we ended on a good note, with cricket - some fantastic coaching from some of the class.
All in all, a great week. Well done class!
Mr C, Mrs J and the class 6 team.

A short week, but one packed with activities -
From co-ordinates and geometry revision in maths, to a new book in English - Floodland - which we will be basing writing around for the next 3 weeks and this week one of the things we did was a 'freeze' based on our feelings:
In science, we have been exploring oxidation with experiments on nails and screws:
We have been continuing with artwork on logos:
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr C, Mrs J, Miss H and the team.

The bank holiday weekend is upon us... it's almost May! It's a shame the weather doesn't realise this...
So, this week we have been looking at line graphs, as a start to our data handling topic and have quickly realised the full value of a sharp pencil and a ruler.
In English, we have concluded our 'Window' topic, with some fantastic poetry writing and recital in groups. This topic NEVER fails to capture the imagination and provoke a lot of debate about green belt and building new homes.
A fantastic book!
In science, we have continued our topic on properties of materials with a two day experiment on thermal conducting and isolating. We used different materials to package our cup of water and measured the difference in temperature.
We looked at the evidence for the kings in the ancient Shang dynasty (is it reliable?) and tried to put them chronologically - which was a challenge!
Sometimes harrowing, quite inspirational and hard to read the end without a tear in my eye, this book is a sobering true account of two children's journeys in Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya (and the USA). Fantastic!
Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.
Mr C, Mrs J and the team.
