What a busy and exciting week it has been for Year 6 at Netherthong Primary School! We’ve been hard at work with some fantastic activities and projects!

Letters to Our Heroes This week, we completed our heartfelt letters to our heroes. After carefully editing and finalising our work, the letters have now been emailed off. Fingers crossed that we receive some replies – we can’t wait to hear back from these amazing people!

Practice SATs Our class has also been hard at work tackling practice SATs this week. We covered a variety of subjects, including reading, maths, grammar, and spelling. These sessions have been a great opportunity to hone our skills, build our confidence, and prepare for the real tests ahead. Everyone has put in a brilliant effort, and myself and Mrs Johnson are incredibly proud of the determination shown by all and the incredible progress everyone has made since we last completed practice SATs papers.

Christmas Play Practice The festive season is well and truly upon us, and so is the excitement of our Christmas play! Rehearsals are still in full swing, with everyone working hard to perfect their lines, actions, and songs. It’s wonderful to see the play really coming together this week, and we’re sure it will be an incredible performance for you all to enjoy.

Church Visit On Wednesday, we took a trip to the local church to learn more about the story of Christmas. It was a lovely experience, filled with interesting insights and discussions about the meaning behind this special time of year. A big thank you to the church staff for hosting us and sharing such an engaging session.

Design and Technology Project Finally, we’ve embarked on an exciting new DT project: building bridges! This week, we began the process by brainstorming and designing our very own bridge structures. Next week, we’ll bring these designs to life, using our creativity and problem-solving skills to construct our bridges. Everyone is buzzing with ideas, and we can’t wait to see the final results.

Thank you everyone and have a wonderful weekend.

What a busy and exciting week it has been in Year 6! Here's a little insight into what we’ve been up to across all our subjects:

English

This week, we’ve been focusing on letter-writing, and not just any letters – we’ve been drafting heartfelt messages to our heroes! The children have been working hard to explain why their chosen hero is so important to them, adding personal touches and persuasive language to their writing. After planning and drafting, we polished our work through editing sessions to ensure every letter is as perfect as can be. Everyone is now eagerly hoping their letters will inspire a response!

Maths

In Maths, we completed our topic on fractions with a focus on multiplying and dividing them. The children showed excellent progress and confidence with these concepts. After fractions, we moved on to learning about co-ordinates. We practised reading and plotting points in all four quadrants before taking on some challenges with translating, reflecting, and moving shapes across the grid. The class worked brilliantly and seemed to enjoy the practical and visual nature of this topic.

Science

This week in Science, we revisited some learning from Year 3, focusing on healthy eating and the benefits of different foods for our bodies and organs. It was fantastic to see how much the children remembered and to build on their prior knowledge. From protein for muscles to vitamins for immunity, we’ve explored how the right foods can keep us strong and healthy.

History

In History, we explored the anti-war movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. The children learned about the importance of peace activism and the power of people working together for a common cause. Inspired by what they learned, they designed their own anti-war posters filled with striking imagery and thoughtful slogans. Some children even created anti-war poems and lyrics – a truly creative and meaningful way to engage with this topic.

Christmas Play Practice

The festive season is truly upon us, and that means Christmas play rehearsals are in full swing! This week, we achieved a huge milestone by doing our first full run-through without needing scripts or lyric sheets. The children were fantastic – their acting, singing, and enthusiasm are shining through, and the play is shaping up to be something truly special. Everyone is excited to perform for parents and carers soon.

It’s been a brilliant week filled with learning, creativity, and collaboration. Well done, Year 6!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Clayton

Year 6 Blog - Netherthong School

Hello everyone!

This week in Year 6 has been an exciting and busy one, full of learning and creativity. Here’s a quick look at some of what we’ve been up to:

English
We’ve been exploring the theme of heroes and inspirational figures. Each of us chose someone we admire, conducted research about their lives and achievements, and presented our findings to the class. It’s been fascinating to learn about the people who inspire us! Next week, we’ll take this further by writing letters to our heroes—who knows, we might even get a reply!

Maths
Fractions have been the focus this week! We’ve been practising how to order and compare fractions, as well as learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them. Alongside this, we’ve been sharpening our Arithmetic skills as we gear up for SATs later in the year. Keep practising at home, everyone—you’re doing brilliantly.

Science
This week’s science lessons were both fun and educational. We investigated how to change the rate of our pulse and discovered that exercise is a key factor. We also learned about the role of the lungs in the circulatory system and tested our lung capacity using plastic bottles, water, and straws. A big thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm during these experiments!

Christmas Play
The Christmas production is coming together beautifully. We’ve been hard at work learning lines and perfecting the lyrics to the songs. Keep it up, Year 6—the performance is just a few weeks away, and it’s going to be fantastic!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Mrs Clayton.

What a fantastic week it has been in Class 6! We’ve been busy learning, creating, and having loads of fun in all our lessons. Here’s a round-up of what we’ve been up to this week.

This week, we dove into the world of explanation texts. We explored their key features, looked at some examples, and then got to work on creating our very own explanation texts. The topic? How to navigate different activities at Robinwood! From brainstorming and drafting to editing and perfecting our final copies, everyone worked hard to craft clear, detailed, and engaging pieces of writing.

In Maths, our focus has been on area, perimeter, and volume. We’ve explored how shapes can be sneaky – some 3D shapes might share the same volume but have completely different perimeters, and vice versa. It was fascinating to see how small changes in dimensions could make a big difference.

Science was *so much fun* this week! We learned all about the heart, including its chambers, ventricles, and atria. To bring our learning to life, we used marshmallows on sticks to mimic our hearts pumping – a great hands-on activity (and we may have eaten a few marshmallows at the end too!).

Our dance routines are really coming together! This week, we introduced new elements like cannons, mirrors, and formations, adding layers of creativity and teamwork. It’s been fantastic to see everyone working so hard and supporting one another as we perfect our moves.

With the festive season fast approaching, we’ve continued practising our lines and songs for the upcoming Christmas performance. Excitement is building, and it’s wonderful to see the class coming together to make this show extra special.

In ICT, we put on our designer hats and worked on creating our very own webpages. It was amazing to see everyone’s creativity and tech skills shine as they brought their designs to life.

All in all, it’s been a brilliant week full of learning and fun. Well done, Class 6 – let’s keep the enthusiasm going as we head into next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Clayton

It’s been an exciting and busy week in Year 6 at Netherthong Primary School. We’ve covered a lot, from wrapping up our writing projects in English to diving into history, science, and some holiday excitement. Here’s a recap of all the wonderful things we’ve been learning and doing!

English: Perfecting Our Recounts

In English this week, we’ve been working hard on the final drafts of our recount texts. We’ve really focused on polishing our writing to make sure we’re meeting the Year 6 writing objectives. It’s been fantastic to see everyone putting in so much effort to make their writing as engaging and high-quality as possible!

Maths: Time Conversions and Triangles

In Maths, we’ve been looking at something quite practical: measuring and converting time! We’ve learned to convert between hours, minutes, and seconds, and everyone’s worked hard on solving problems that involve multiple steps. We’ve also started calculating the area of triangles, which has been both challenging and fun. Using the formula (base x height ÷ 2), we practiced finding areas and solving some trickier problems with irregular measurements.

Christmas Play Preparations: Peter Pan

This week has been filled with excitement as we started preparing for our Christmas play, *Peter Pan*! We’ve been discussing our character, reading through the script, and singing songs that will be part of our performance in December. The whole class is buzzing with energy, and you can really see how enthusiastic everyone is to bring the story of Peter Pan to life. From Tinker Bell to Captain Hook, everyone’s eager to play their part and put on a show for our families and friends. We can already tell it’s going to be a magical performance!

History: The Battle of Britain

In History, we’ve taken a step back in time to learn about the Battle of Britain. This was a crucial event during World War II when Britain had to defend itself against the German Luftwaffe’s attacks. We discussed why it’s considered a turning point in history and learned about the brave pilots for their courage and determination. Understanding the importance of this event and the resilience it took to protect the country has given us a new perspective on the sacrifices people made during the war.

Science: The Circulatory System

In Science, we’ve started learning about the circulatory system. We discussed how our heart pumps blood throughout our body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to our cells and removing waste products. We learned about the roles of arteries, veins, and capillaries, and how they work together to keep our bodies healthy. We even got to do some fun activities that helped us understand how blood flows through different parts of our body. It’s fascinating to see how all the systems in our bodies are connected and work in harmony!

Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for more updates from Year 6!
