Remote Learning Friday 22nd May 2020

admin on: Class 6

Good morning you to everyone! You have done it, survived a full half term of home learning!

What another beautiful day we had yesterday with the weather, I do hope it continues next week! My partner, James, was getting a little fed up and lonely at our house on his own so bought the Old Trafford football ground to build. We thought it would take him a couple of weeks but it only took him a couple of days, so as an early birthday present, I decided to get him some second-hand Lego from Ebay. He has now constructed Tower Bridge, he even had to construct the little red bus and yellow taxi! It took him four days in total, he would have finished it sooner but decided to spread the experience of building it out! Here are the masterpieces …

Who joined in the World Record breaking art lesson yesterday? I know I did and loved it!

Here are the drawings that Georige, Oliver, his Mum, Mrs Barker, my Mum, Grandma and me all drew!

What have you been constructing at home? Let me know!

So, on to today:

Reading: the usual 30 minutes, at least, please.

Science:

We are still looking at the topic of Living things and their habitats, focusing on field guides.

A field guide is a book designed to help the reader identify the living things that can be found in a particular habitat. Imagine that you have been asked to use your knowledge of classifying living things to create a field guide for the habitat around your home. You will have to explore the habitat, identify the organisms that you find and then classify each organism to create your field guide.

Carefully search the areas outside your home. You should look for plants and animals. Remember, it is important that you do not touch or eat any of the organisms you find. It could be very dangerous!

If you find more than one example of a species, you do not need to record it more than once. For example, you might find lots of dandelions, but you should only record 'dandelion' once. Here are two identification sheet which could be of use to you for plants and animals. You should record your findings on a table similar to this:

Now that you have identified some of the organisms that live in the habitat around your home, it is time to create your field guide.

Use the field guide template to create your book. You will need to decide how each living thing is classified, and list it in the correct place in the field guide. You may also wish to add a picture of each organism.

Include a description of each group of living things, including information about their characteristics.

Here is the field guide template for you to use. Happy hunting!

Computing:

Have you written on our Padlet yet? It is looking amazing! Please do keep adding to it as it is making me and everyone else smile! Already written on it? Please add more as you will always make someone smile!

Our Wall of Smiles - Padlet

Here is what it looks like so far …

DT:

We are going to be cooking dishes from around the world. Please do not feel like you have to purchase the ingredients especially, adapt the recipes to what you have at home. Today we are in Mexico, looking at traditional Mexican food …

Here are the recipes for guacamole, salsa and quesadillas. When preparing think about the different techniques to use. Cut the tomato in half and then quarters using ‘The Bridge’ technique.

Use ‘The Claw’ technique to help you dice the tomato.

Good luck and let us know how you get on! Write a review of the food that you make and any recommendations!

Have a lovely weekend, half term and remember to stay safe!

Holidays!

admin on: Class 6

Evening all,

Before I hand over to Miss H for your Friday fun, I just thought I'd take a moment to wish you happy holidays for next week. It looks like it's going to be beautiful weather, so enjoy yourselves.

How do you find Will Smith in the snow?
Follow the fresh prints (sorry, that hasn't been culturally relevant for a while).

Why did Snoop Dogg need an umbrella?
Fo' drizzle (that's closer).

Finally... I own the world's worst thesaurus... Not only is it terrible, it's terrible!

Stay safe and keep applying sun screen.

Thursday 21st May

admin on: Class 6

Morning all,

I'm going to start by telling you all that I hate elevators...
I'm taking steps to avoid them!

While I was out and about yesterday, I saw Michael J Fox at the garden centre!
He had his back to the fuscias.

I'll stop there...

Well done with the programming - 11 of you signed up. I can only tell who one of you is, that's Rogan, who helpfully put his name on his profile. If you could all amend your profiles that would help. I did have feedback that it is quite difficult - from one person. Can others let me know what they think please? Also, I'd like more of you signing up, then I can plan things for after the holidays.
Please carry on with the programming today.

Computing: Here's a lesson on What Makes a Good Computer Game - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z6n7xyc

Maths: triangles... https://www.thenational.academy/year-6/maths/compare-and-classify-triangles-year-6-wk3-2

Reading: 30 minutes at least please. Here are some readers:

Martha reading to her lamb... aah!

Exercise: I loved the photos you sent of new exercises - here's another one that should be an Olympic sport -

 Alex!
 Darcey the giant, playing snooker.

Here's Mr Biscuit, not understanding exercise:

And walking dogs is important -

Topic: Languages... I'd like you to research the top 5 languages spoken in the world today and list how many people speak them. THEN, I'd like you to look into where English is spoken. How many countries speak it? How does that compare to the number of countries speaking Spanish? Or French?
Finally, look at the top 5 (by population) countries who speak English. Is England in there? How does our population of English speakers compare to the people in the list?

I'm in school with Mr Kershaw and Miss Kewley today, so I'll be walking on there in 5 minutes. Have a lovely day and here are some more photos:

Amy trying to eat Darcey's cake through a screen.
 More food by Darcey!
 Food by Georgie.
 Food by Lyela.

You all know how much I love Jamaica - Reuben has been using jerk seasoning:
 Looks irie, doesn't it?

He also made cake:
I wonder if he's going to be bringing some in for Mr K, Miss Kewley and me?

 Max recycling...

 Betsy, by MarthA

A cheetah (my favourite animal) by Guy - I love the head - it's Guy's new signature.

 Darcey's dog - sorry, don't know his/her name?

Very arty photos by Georgie - lovely!

And finally - Oli spent his afternoon at war:

What goes down, but doesn't come up?
A yo!

Seeya'll.

Fancy some World Record breaking art?

admin on: Class 6

Isabel, in year 2, pointed this out to me and I had to pass it along ...

Like many of us, you may have been enjoying Rob Biddulph’s brilliant Draw with Rob draw along videos, which have amassed a huge online following and now been watched over 2 million times on YouTube.

On May 21st, Rob is going to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the World’s Biggest Art Lesson

Rob will be live on YouTube at 4.00pm (BST) but in order for the attempt to meet Guinness World Records’ criteria we need participants – young and old –  to register for the free lesson at www.artworldrecords.com and be there for the whole 30 minutes.

The attempt will also help to raise money for those most impacted by COVID-19.  Participants can donate what they can and companies have also begun to pledge financial support. These donations will go towards high impact charities to counter the impact of COVID-19, including stopping the disease’s spread, providing immediate relief to those most impacted and preventing future pandemics.

Wednesday 20th May

admin on: Class 6

Morning all,

Computer programming anyone? If you want to have a go, click on this link: https://www.khanacademy.org/join/ABGHEPDK

It will take you to Khan Academy and enrol you in my class. I'd be really interested in what you think of this. If it's successful, it's something we will continue for the rest of this year. I'll be able to monitor your progress and hopefully give you activities to do together. Give me feedback please.

Did I ever tell you that I used to work at a calendar factory?
I got sacked because I took a couple of days off.

Maths: https://www.thenational.academy/year-6/maths/find-the-value-of-missing-angles-year-6-wk3-1
Again - I'd like comments on this website please; I'm trying different things.

Thanks for your reviews on the writing. It's 'interesting' and they are all different. Well done! I am STILL waiting for Dark for some reason... come on...

Science: Magnets! https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfrxhbk

I'd like you to do some Art today please. It's going to be a lovely day - please go outside and find something that inspires you. Capture it somehow. It may be a pencil sketch, a collage, a painting, a photograph - whatever you think works best. Send it to me... let me know if you want me to share it.

Finally, I'd like you to think about making something to eat for your family. Research it today. More tomorrow...

I used to hate facial hair... but then it grew on me!

Photos...

Good exercise - thanks Alex and Reuben for sharing with us all.

These are all photos of birds, taken by Rio.

Have a fantastic day everyone... I'm still in the office... eating KBLA's chocolate flapjack - which I've hidden in the fridge... ssh!

Don't forget exercise and reading!
